In the beginning of 2014, the European Commission published the 2030 Energy and Climate Package, which set the policy framework for climate and energy in the period from 2020 to 2030. The communication proposed two targets: a greenhouse gas emission reduction target of 40% and a EU-wide target for the use of renewable energy of at least 27%. The European Council of October 2014, endorsed these two targets and added a third pillar to the Commission’s policy framework, by recommending an energy efficiency target of at least 27% by 2030. Moreover, the European Council invited the Commission to further examine instruments to extend the promotion of emission’s reduction in the transport sector post-2020. In this context, the Brazilian Sugarcane Industry Association (UNICA), in partnership with Apex-Brasil organized an event to discuss possible alternatives for the EU road transport in the 2030 policy framework. The event focused on the amount of transport emissions that the EU will face in 2030 in the absence of any reduction target for the sector and the health benefit of using ethanol.
